Chapter Sixteen

Nico

I watched Annabelle drag Roxanne away. My heart swelled at the sight. She’s so good with kids. Toni nagged me about the gift I got him, drawing my attention back to my nephew, and I reminded him that his gift was a surprise. He’ll have to wait. His friends came running up to drag him back to the play area.

I went to find Oliver. The toys should have been delivered, and I’d need his help to move the gifts from the front door to the living room. After moving the gifts, I was pulled into conversations with aunts and uncles who questioned me about Roxanne and proclaimed that she was not good enough for me. The single women attending the party also flocked around me. Despite seeing me with Roxanne earlier, they flirted like she was just a fling, and they had an actual chance with me.

I looked toward the house. When will Roxanne return? I didn’t realize how much of a shield she was until this very moment. A screech drew everyone’s attention to the bar. I sighed, recognizing that all-too-familiar sound. Excusing myself from the women around me, I went to find my sister. I found her in a catfight with Irene, their hands tangled in each other’s hair and a crowd forming around them.

“Break it up.” I hollered, breaking through to wrap my arms around Candi’s waist. “Let her go Candi.”

My sister refused to listen. I’ve never understood why these two could never get along. I looked around for Brina but couldn’t find her. I tugged Candi back. She hissed at me and strained to scratch Irene’s eyes out. This is the first time these two have gotten into a physical fight. Usually, they are found in a verbal spar.

Irene is my uncle’s mistress. He met her three years ago and claimed she made him feel young again. Every time I saw them together, though, they never appeared to be romantically involved. Instead, the blonde consistently flirted with me. Her flirting didn’t feel genuine either. It felt forced. I told my uncle about her advances, but he didn’t seem to care that his mistress was looking for entertainment elsewhere.

“What is going on?” Sonia demanded, rushing up to the scene. “Irene! Candi! Break it up!”

Still, the women clawed at each other. Someone had finally wrapped their arms around Irene. With quite a lot of effort, we pulled the women apart. Candi and Irene’s feet kicked out, and their arms extended. Even from a distance, they were still trying to attack the other. What has gotten into them? I’ve never seen Candi get physically violent before.

“Cristo, Candi, fermare.” I growled.

“I’ve had it with her.” Candi growled back.

“Princess, if you break a nail, I’m not fixing it.” Roxanne stated firmly.

Candi stiffened in my arms and looked down at her hands. “No, you can’t.”

“How dare you fight in front of my children.” Sonia tsked. “On their birthday, no less.”

“She threw her drink at me.” Candi defended and pointed a finger at Irene.
